45 foot waves

These are some of the last pictures with our digital that bit the dust. My friend Michele and I decided to head out to the north shore with Ben, when we heard there were going to be 45 foot waves! Dan(my hubby) and Ed(Michele's hubby) were pretty darn bummed that they had to work. But I think we got some pretty good pictures of them!

Early in the morning before hitting the beach, Ben was such a good boy and let me finish my philosophy homework. In this picture he is checking the printer to make sure it's working for me. Such a good helper!

We first drove to some calm waves, compared to waves later in the day.
Over at Laie point, the waves were just getting started. We stopped and took a few pictures.

According to our Hawaii travel book, it is very rare that a wave comes in through the hole of this rock. On this day it did.

The waves kept splashing against the rocks, and making a huge spray of white wash. It was seriously breathe taking.

And then we got to Sunset beach. A few weeks ago we took pictures at this same beach. It was sunny, surfers were out catching waves, birds were chirping. This day it was anything but that. It was over cast, the sound of the waves drowned out any happy birds flying around. And there was not one surfer in the ocean. The only word to describe these waves in massive! You had to be there in person to understand. It was all white wash from the waves pounding in and breaking so quickly. And the current was so strong, that if you even went close to the shore, the current and wind sucked you in. So as soon as a wave went in, it was sucked right back out. Causing a lot of sand to be stirred up and caught in the wave. Pretty intense waves!

Michele taking pictures of the waves....check out those waves!

Can you see that even the small waves in front were pounding down so strong?!?!

This gives you a little idea of the height. Our little digital could not catch on camera what was being seen in person.

And then we drove down the road to Pipeline. A lot of the famous surfing competitions are held here.
The current in the water was just too dangerous that day. The big wave competition was cancelled.

Ben dreaming of becoming a Pipeline competition surfer one day.....

So rare for Hawaii but, not one surfer out in the ocean that day.

Locals and tourists all came to see the big waves.

From the lifeguard tower view.

You can't tell from this picture...but the waves were huge!

Smile and say 45 foot waves!

Ben could have cared less about the waves...he wanted to pet these puppies that kept walking past his stroller.

Okay time to go...it's starting to rain...again!
